WHAT IS THE MASSETER MUSCLE?

The masseter is a facial muscle located at the angle of the lower jaw, connecting the mandible to the cheekbone. It is the main muscle used for chewing, biting, and grinding food. In some people, it can become enlarged due to teeth grinding or clenching. This hypertrophy is not dangerous but can cause discomfort and change the appearance of the face.

WHAT IS MASSETER HYPERTROPHY?

In people who clench or grind their teeth, or who frequently chew gum, the masseter muscle tends to become hypertrophic, which may lead to facial asymmetry. For some patients, a large masseter is simply hereditary. Masseter hypertrophy can give the jaw a bulkier, more square appearance. Because of this look, some people choose to treat their masseters to make them less prominent and achieve a more feminine jawline. Others seek treatment to relieve pain associated with bruxism or TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder).

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TREATING AN OVERDEVELOPED MASSETER?

  • Aesthetic Aspect
An overly developed masseter can widen the jaw and give the face a square shape, reducing the natural softness of an oval face. Many women consult to relax this muscle and reshape the jawline for a slimmer, more balanced, and harmonious contour.
  • Medical Aspect
Masseter hypertrophy is often linked to bruxism—unconscious teeth grinding, especially at night. This muscle tension can cause facial pain, earaches, neck pain, and chronic headaches. Repeated grinding also wears down tooth enamel, causing long-term dental damage if left untreated.
  • Treatment Benefits
By targeting an overactive masseter, both facial aesthetics and daily comfort are improved. The treatment reduces muscle size, relieves tension, and helps prevent dental wear—all while creating a more refined and harmonious appearance.

WHAT IS BOTOX® FOR BRUXISM?

The precise and targeted use of Botox® has been shown to significantly relieve symptoms associated with bruxism and TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder).

Botox® is a purified protein used to relax muscles. When expertly and precisely administered by an experienced injector, it targets the contracted muscles in the head and neck, thereby releasing built-up pressure.

As a result, you will notice far less jaw clenching and teeth grinding throughout the day, along with reduced symptoms and even decreased stress.

HOW DOES BOTOX® FOR BRUXISM WORK?

Botox®, injected precisely by an experienced physician, relaxes the masseter muscle, reduces its size, and refines the jawline for softer, more harmonious contours.

The treatment involves small injections on both sides of the jaw using a fine needle. No anesthesia is required, and discomfort is usually minimal. Initial results appear within a few days, with full results visible in about two weeks. To maintain effects, sessions must be repeated regularly.

Private insurance may cover all or part of the treatment. Please check with your insurance provider for details of your coverage.
