Dermal Fillers
Dr. John Rowen assesses your face and injects hyaluronic acid where volume is missing: lips, cheeks, under-eye hollows, folds, chin or jawline. Appointments in Westmount (Montreal) and Knowlton (Brome Lake).
What are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers?
With age, the skin loses collagen, elastic tissue, bone and fat. These structures support the skin: as they decrease, volume is lost and hollows and wrinkles appear.
Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally found in the skin. Injected as a gel, it restores volume, smooths some folds and redefines facial contours. It is a minimally invasive injectable treatment, often combined with anti-wrinkle injections (neuromodulators).
We use recognized hyaluronic acid products such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Teosyal®, Revanesse® and Belotero®. All injectable treatments are performed by Dr. Rowen.
Treatment areas
- Lips: volume, shape and hydration.
- Cheeks and under-eye hollows: restore volume to the mid-face.
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: soften deep folds.
- Chin and jawline: refine and redefine the contour.
- Earlobes: firm up stretched or sagging earlobes (fully split earlobes cannot be repaired this way).

Lip filler with hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid holds water. Injected superficially, it can improve lip hydration and give the lips a smoother, softer look. See also Thin lips and perioral wrinkles and the lip flip, an option without filler.
How the treatment works
Before treatment, Dr. Rowen assesses your facial anatomy to determine where volume is needed. He has practised aesthetic medicine for over 25 years.
The product is injected under the skin with a fine needle or a cannula. The areas can be pre-treated with a numbing cream, and most products contain lidocaine to reduce discomfort. A touch-up is sometimes done after one or two weeks, once the result has settled.
Safety: the role of ultrasound
Serious complications are rare, but they can occur if the product is accidentally injected into a blood vessel. That is why the injector must know exactly where the vessels are.
For higher-risk areas of the face, Dr. Rowen uses ultrasound. It shows the key structures and helps target the ideal injection site. He combines it with slow injection and blunt-tip cannulas. Dr. Rowen is an accredited trainer with the Cutaneous group.

How long do results last?
Hyaluronic acid is slowly absorbed by the body. Results generally last 6 to 24 months, depending on several factors:
- The product: longevity varies by brand and category.
- Area and depth: product placed near the surface, in a very mobile area such as the mouth, is absorbed faster than product placed deep, on the bone.
- Your metabolism: lifestyle and genetics affect how quickly the product breaks down.
- Volume injected: a volume suited to the area tends to last longer.
After treatment
Mild swelling and small bruises at the injection sites are common. They fade on their own within a few days. Avoid intense physical activity and makeup for 24 hours after the injection.

Questions about dermal fillers
What is a hyaluronic acid filler injection?
It is the injection of a hyaluronic acid gel, a molecule naturally found in the skin. It restores volume lost with age, softens some folds and redefines facial contours: lips, cheeks, under-eye hollows, folds, chin or jawline.
How much do dermal fillers cost?
The cost depends on the area treated, the product chosen and the amount needed. It is presented to you during the consultation, after Dr. Rowen has assessed your face.
Do filler injections hurt?
Discomfort is usually mild. The areas can be pre-treated with a numbing cream, and most products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to reduce pain during the injection.
How long does lip filler last?
It varies with the product, the amount injected and your metabolism. The lips are a very mobile area: product there is generally absorbed faster than in a deeper area, such as the cheeks.
Can hyaluronic acid filler be dissolved if I don’t like the result?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible thanks to an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It breaks down the product, so the result can be adjusted or reversed if needed.
Is there any downtime?
Very little. Mild swelling and small bruises are common and fade within a few days. We recommend avoiding intense physical activity and makeup for 24 hours after the injection.
Do fillers wear off faster in very active people?
The scientific data is not yet conclusive. Most experts agree that a faster metabolism, common in very active people, may slightly shorten how long results last.
What is the difference between a dermal filler and a neuromodulator?
A dermal filler restores volume and fills hollows. A neuromodulator relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines, such as forehead lines. The two treatments are often combined, based on Dr. Rowen’s assessment.
Where can I get lip filler or dermal fillers near Bromont or Granby?
At our Knowlton clinic, 273 Knowlton Road, in Brome Lake. It welcomes patients from Sutton, Cowansville, Bromont, Granby and the Brome-Missisquoi region. In Montreal, Dr. Rowen also sees patients at our Westmount clinic.
