DOUBLE CHIN
Your questions, our answers.
Everything you need to know about
the condition.
WHAT IS IT?
A double chin, or “submental fullness,” is an accumulation of fat beneath the chin that creates the appearance of a “double” under the chin and jawline.
It can affect facial contour regardless of body weight and may be perceived as a sign of aging or genetic predisposition.
CAUSES OF A DOUBLE CHIN
Natural aging
As we age, the skin loses elasticity and its ability to remain firm, especially around the chin and jawline. This laxity can lead to the formation of a double chin, even without significant weight gain.
Weight gain
Excess body fat, particularly in the face and chin area, is a primary cause of a double chin. Even modest weight gain can result in fat accumulation under the chin.
Genetic predisposition
Some individuals are genetically predisposed to store more fat under the chin. This may occur even in lean individuals, as bone structure and genetics influence how facial fat is distributed.
Posture and lifestyle habits
Poor posture, such as consistently looking downward at screens, can contribute to skin sagging under the chin. In addition, an unbalanced diet high in sugars and saturated fats may encourage fat storage, including under the chin.
Loss of collagen and elastin
With age, the skin naturally loses collagen and elastin. This reduction in structural support contributes to sagging skin beneath the chin, making a double chin more visible.
HOW TO PREVENT A DOUBLE CHIN?
Maintain a stable weight: Avoiding large fluctuations in weight reduces the risk of developing a double chin. A balanced diet, rich in nutrients and low in saturated fats, helps prevent fat accumulation.
Targeted exercises for the neck and chin: Specific exercises, such as neck rotations or “kissing the sky” (tilting the head back and puckering the lips), may help tone the skin and muscles beneath the chin.
Improve posture: Keeping a straight posture and avoiding prolonged downward head positions can help prevent skin laxity and the development of a double chin.
Hydration and skincare: Using firming creams and hydrating serums with active ingredients like retinol or hyaluronic acid supports skin elasticity under the chin.
Sun protection: Since premature aging of the skin under the chin can be accelerated by sun exposure, applying sunscreen is essential to prevent skin laxity.
HOW TO TREAT A DOUBLE CHIN?
Deoxycholic Acid Injections (Belkyra®)
Belkyra is an injectable treatment designed to permanently destroy fat cells under the chin. It effectively reduces submental fullness, typically achieved over multiple sessions.
Radiofrequency (RF) – SylfirmX
Radiofrequency treatments like SylfirmX use controlled energy to heat the skin and stimulate collagen production. This tightens the skin beneath the chin while reducing fat deposits.
Ultherapy® (Ulthera®)
Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin. This non-invasive treatment lifts and tightens the skin under the chin, improving overall definition of the jawline.
