WHAT ARE COMMON SKIN LESIONS AND GROWTHS?
With age — and sometimes due to heredity — it is common to see small skin lesions or growths appear: bumps, tags, red or brown spots, or rough patches. Generally benign, they may nevertheless cause discomfort or be perceived as unattractive.
While most are harmless, it is important to monitor any changes and consult a professional if in doubt. Safe and effective treatments are available to remove them and improve the appearance of the skin.
Common examples of lesions treated at the clinic:
- Acrochordons (skin tags): Small, soft, benign growths often found on the neck, eyelids, or armpits.
- Moles (nevi): Most are benign, but some may develop into skin cancer. Any changes should be evaluated by a physician.
- Keratoses: Rough patches linked to sun exposure or aging.
- Actinic keratosis: May develop into skin cancer.
- Seborrheic keratosis: Benign but often considered unattractive.
- Cherry angiomas (angioma rubi): Small red or purplish spots caused by dilated blood vessels, common with age.
Spider angiomas: Small star- or spider-shaped blood vessels, often on the face or neck, benign and sometimes temporary.
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR BENIGN SKIN LESIONS AND GROWTHS?
Several safe and effective options exist to quickly and precisely remove skin lesions.
- Cryotherapy
This technique involves applying liquid nitrogen directly to the lesion, freezing and destroying the unwanted cells. It is commonly used for various benign skin lesions, with fast results and minimal recovery time. - Electrocoagulation
Electrocoagulation uses a high-frequency electric current delivered through an electrocautery device. The heat destroys the lesion in a targeted way while minimizing irritation and preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. - Vascular Laser
Vascular lasers are effective for eliminating spider veins, superficial blood vessels, broken capillaries, telangiectasias, and other vascular lesions commonly found around the nose, eyes, cheeks, and lips.
WHEN SHOULD I HAVE A SKIN LESION EVALUATED?
If you notice a new skin lesion or any changes in the color, shape, size, or texture of an existing lesion, it is recommended to have it evaluated. Dr. John Rowen can examine your skin lesions, provide a diagnosis, and recommend the most appropriate treatment or follow-up. Early diagnosis is often the best way to ensure prompt and effective care.
