Sculptra® – Collagen Biostimulator

A natural collagen stimulator
Sculptra collagen biostimulator

Sculptra® is neither a filler nor a neurotoxin. It is a collagen biostimulator made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that helps your skin regenerate naturally. An option for a subtle yet meaningful change, offered in Montreal (Westmount) and Knowlton by Dr. John Rowen’s team.

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is a long-lasting collagen stimulator. Rather than adding volume immediately like a filler, it restarts natural collagen production in the deep dermis. The skin gradually becomes firmer, smoother and denser, with a natural-looking effect.

What is a collagen biostimulator?

Biostimulators are compounds injected into the deep dermis that stimulate natural collagen and elastin production. From age 20, collagen production decreases by 1 to 1.5% per year. For some people, especially during menopause, this loss can reach 30% in 5 years, then continue at about 2% per year. Biostimulators help slow this process and maintain skin density and firmness.

How does Sculptra® work?

Once injected, the poly-L-lactic acid gel spreads and is slowly absorbed by the body. Its presence stimulates collagen production. As the skin’s support structures regenerate, the skin becomes smoother and wrinkles gradually fade.

Who is it for?

Treatment process

A personalized plan

Your plan is set with Dr. Rowen based on your needs. As a guideline, one vial of Sculptra® per decade of life is generally recommended (for example, 4 vials at age 40).

Number of sessions

On average, 2 to 3 sessions spaced at least 3 to 4 weeks apart are needed. Some people need only two, others four or more. Dr. Rowen monitors how your skin responds to adjust the plan. Attending all your appointments is important.

Results

Sculptra® does not produce an immediate effect. Mild swelling may appear after the injection, then subsides within one or two days: it is normal to look as you did before. The skin then regenerates over several months. In clinical studies, most participants saw results after 1 month, with effects lasting up to 2 years. Results vary from person to person.

Aftercare

  • Massage the treated areas 5 times a day, for about 5 minutes, for 5 days.
  • Gently apply ice for 3 to 5 minutes, several times on the day of treatment.
  • Makeup can be applied a few hours after the session.
  • Redness, swelling and bruising may last 2 to 7 days.
  • No facials or professional massages for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid intense physical activity and alcohol for 24 hours, if possible.

Sculptra® or Radiesse®?

Both are collagen biostimulators. Sculptra® (poly-L-lactic acid) works gradually, with no immediate effect. Radiesse® (calcium hydroxylapatite) provides an immediate volumizing effect while stimulating collagen. The choice depends on your needs and is made with Dr. Rowen during your assessment.

Combining with other treatments

Depending on your lifestyle and skincare routine, combining with other technologies, such as Sylfirm X or Ultherapy, may be recommended for optimal results.
