THIN LIPS & PERIORAL WRINKLES (Upper Lip)
Your questions, our answers.
Everything you need to know about
the condition.
WHAT IS IT?
Thin lips and perioral wrinkles are visible signs of aging that affect the area around the mouth. Naturally finer lips lose volume and definition over time. In parallel, horizontal or vertical wrinkles can form around the mouth, especially on the lip contour. These wrinkles are often called “smoker’s lines” or “expression lines,” although they can affect everyone, not just smokers.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
Natural aging
The decline in collagen and elastin production with age reduces skin firmness and elasticity, contributing to thinning lips and the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth.
Repeated muscle movements
Facial expressions such as smiling, talking, or smoking (repeated inhalation) engage the muscles around the mouth and lead to wrinkle formation. Over time, these repetitive movements can mark the skin.
Loss of lip volume
With age, lips lose volume due to reduced subcutaneous tissue. This loss of volume contributes to a less defined contour and the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth.
Sun exposure
Prolonged exposure to UV rays alters collagen structure, leading to skin laxity and premature wrinkles, including around the lips.
Smoking
Smoking accelerates skin aging by breaking down collagen and elastin. It contributes to the formation of perioral wrinkles, particularly with repeated inhalation and associated movements.
PREVENTION & TREATMENT OPTIONS
Dermal Fillers (Hyaluronic Acid)
Restore lip volume, redefine the lip contour, and smooth perioral wrinkles.
Botulinum Toxin (Botox®)
Relaxes the muscles responsible for expression lines, reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the lips.
Chemical Peels
Exfoliate superficial skin layers and stimulate collagen production, softening fine lines and improving skin texture.
Microneedling (Dermapen DP4)
Stimulates natural collagen and elastin production, smoothing wrinkles and improving lip contour texture.
Anti-aging Creams & Serums
Products with retinol, vitamin C, or hyaluronic acid can help restore firmness and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth.
Radiofrequency (SylfirmX RF)
Non-invasive treatment that stimulates deep skin layers to promote collagen production and tighten skin around the lips.
Fractional Laser (FRAX 1500)
Improves fine lines and skin texture by boosting collagen renewal.
Ultherapy® (Ulthera)
Uses focused ultrasound to stimulate deep collagen production, tightening skin and reducing laxity or volume loss in the upper lip area.
