IPL & BBL Photorejuvenation
IPL treatment (intense pulsed light) or Forever Young BBL® photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that targets sun spots, redness and small visible vessels. It is offered under the supervision of Dr. John Rowen in Montreal (Westmount) and Knowlton.
What is an IPL treatment?
Over time, sun exposure and natural aging leave visible marks on the skin: pigmentation spots, diffuse redness, small visible vessels and an uneven complexion. IPL photorejuvenation uses the energy of pulsed light to target these signs, with no incisions or needles. It also helps stimulate collagen production, gradually supporting a more even, radiant complexion.
IPL vs. BBL laser: what is the difference?
IPL (intense pulsed light) and BBL (BroadBand Light) work on the same principle. Although BBL is often called a “BBL laser”, unlike a laser, both emit several wavelengths of light. This allows different visible concerns to be treated at the same time, such as sun damage, small visible vessels and uneven skin tone. Device settings are adjusted to your skin type and concerns.
What the treatment can target
Sun spots and pigmentation
The light is absorbed by the melanin in sun spots, age spots and freckles. Pigments may darken temporarily, then fade or clear naturally. See also: dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Redness, couperose and small vessels
The hemoglobin in blood vessels also absorbs the light, which helps reduce diffuse redness, small vessels and broken capillaries. The treatment can also improve the appearance of redness associated with rosacea. See also: rosacea and couperose and facial veins and telangiectasias.
Skin texture and radiance
By stimulating natural collagen production, the treatment helps improve skin texture, firmness and radiance, while softening some early signs of aging. See also: dull skin and enlarged pores.
What happens during a session?
- The skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is put in place.
- A protective, cooling gel is applied.
- Settings are adjusted to your skin type and the areas to be treated.
- Short pulses of light are delivered: you may feel a tingling or light snapping sensation, which is generally well tolerated.
- Cold compresses or a soothing care may be applied afterwards, if needed.
Number of sessions and maintenance
A series of 3 to 5 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is generally recommended, depending on your skin and goals. Maintenance sessions, ideally once a year, may then be suggested. An appropriate skincare routine and daily sunscreen help maintain results.
Who is a good candidate?
IPL and BBL are mainly suited to lighter skin types. An assessment confirms whether the treatment is right for you. It is essential to:
- avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure before and after each session;
- mention your medications, as some may be temporarily discouraged.
Preparation and aftercare
Before your session
- For one month before, avoid direct or prolonged sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanners.
- On the day of treatment, arrive with clean skin: no makeup, moisturizer, perfume or sunscreen.
After your session
- Day 1: skin may be red, sensitive, slightly swollen and feel sunburned. Drink plenty of water and avoid makeup, exfoliants and glycolic acids.
- Day 2: skin may remain dry and tight; spots may look darker. Makeup is allowed.
- Days 3 to 7: spots may darken, then fade or flake off. Do not scratch them.
- From day 14: skin should be healed; you can resume your usual routine, including retinol.
- At all times: sunscreen and sun protection.

Questions about IPL and BBL photorejuvenation
Does IPL treatment hurt?
You may feel a tingling or light snapping sensation during the pulses, but it is generally well tolerated. A cooling gel is applied before the session, and cold compresses may be used afterwards if needed.
How many photorejuvenation sessions do I need?
A series of 3 to 5 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is generally recommended, depending on your skin and goals. Maintenance sessions, ideally once a year, may then be suggested.
What is the difference between IPL and BBL?
IPL (intense pulsed light) and BBL (BroadBand Light) work on the same principle: unlike a laser, they emit several wavelengths of light. This allows pigmentation spots, redness and uneven skin tone to be treated at the same time.
How long do side effects last after a treatment?
On the first day, skin may be red, sensitive, slightly swollen and feel sunburned. These mild effects can last up to a week. The treatment generally involves no significant downtime.
Can I wear makeup after a session?
It is best to avoid makeup on the day of treatment. From the second day, you can wear makeup.
What happens to the spots after a session?
Pigmentation spots may darken for a few days, then fade or flake off naturally. Do not scratch them. By around day 14, the skin should be healed.
Is IPL photorejuvenation suitable for all skin types?
IPL and BBL are mainly suited to lighter skin types. Avoiding tanning before and after each session is essential to reduce the risk of side effects. An assessment confirms whether the treatment is right for you.
What is the best season for an IPL treatment?
Since sun and tanning must be avoided for a month before and after sessions, low-sunlight periods such as fall and winter make preparation easier. Daily sunscreen remains essential at all times.
Can IPL treat rosacea redness?
The treatment can improve the appearance of diffuse redness, small vessels and redness associated with rosacea. The number of sessions varies depending on the condition treated.
