FACIAL VEINS AND TELANGIECTASIAS
Your questions, our answers.
Everything you need to know about
the condition.
WHAT ARE THEY?
Facial veins and telangiectasias — often called “visible blood vessels” or “broken capillaries” — are small, dilated veins that appear beneath the skin’s surface. They are most noticeable on the face, especially around the cheeks, nose, and chin. These veins can appear red, blue, or purple, and may be linked to poor circulation, fragile vessels, or other factors.
Telangiectasias are a common form of dilated facial veins, appearing as fine lines that resemble small webs or tree branches.
HOW TO PREVENT FACIAL VEINS AND TELANGIECTASIAS?
- Sun protection: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily, even on cloudy days.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure: Especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
- Keep skin hydrated: Use moisturizers suited to your skin type to maintain elasticity and reduce vessel fragility.
- Limit alcohol and quit smoking: Both weaken and dilate vessels, contributing to broken capillaries.
- Support circulation: Exercise regularly (walking, swimming, yoga) and maintain a healthy weight.
- Avoid extreme temperatures: Protect your skin from harsh cold or heat. In winter, wear a scarf or hat to shield your face.
HOW TO TREAT FACIAL VEINS AND TELANGIECTASIAS?
- Laser treatments (Pulsed Dye Laser, Nd:YAG): Highly effective at reducing visible vessels by targeting them with controlled heat, without damaging surrounding skin.
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): Uses pulses of light to target and eliminate dilated vessels, especially effective for redness and telangiectasias.
- Sclerotherapy: Involves injecting a solution into the vein to collapse it. While more common for leg veins, it can sometimes be used for facial veins.
- Electrocoagulation: Uses a fine electric probe to heat and close small dilated vessels. Effective for small telangiectasias.
- Topical creams: Products with retinol or niacinamide can strengthen vessel walls and support collagen production, useful for mild cases.
- Soothing skincare: Aloe vera, chamomile, and other calming ingredients can reduce redness and inflammation, improving the skin’s appearance.
In summary: Facial veins and telangiectasias are common, but many treatment and prevention options exist. Sun protection, gentle skincare, and professional treatments such as laser or IPL can effectively reduce their appearance and restore a clearer, healthier-looking complexion. A consultation with a specialist will help determine the best approach for your skin and needs.
